Propel Careers: The Power of Networking by Lauren Celano
Below are a few thoughts I would like to share about networking.
Relationships are built over time. Networking does not always lead to immediate results, but each time you make a connection and foster a relationship, you set potential in motion. We all know people we describe as power networkers, who are able to effortlessly work a crowd and who seem immensely comfortable even in situations where they know no one. One may ask, how did this happen? Is this a natural skill or one learned? M any of us try to emulate these individuals to become as fluid as them, as good as them, as skilled as them. We all know that networking is a key attribute of successful people, but how do we master the skill? I have asked many successful networkers for the keys to their success, below are a few lessons they have shared:
1. Make the first move. At most networking events, people are uncomfortable and nervous to go up to someone and introduce themselves. If you are not sure what to say, comment on a piece of jewelry, tie, or a bag. Even mundane icebreakers can be successful to navigate into a conversation.
2. Stand by the bar or coffee area. Almost everyone at networking events wants something in their hands so therefore they approach these areas. These are prime spots to meet people. I tend to spend most of my time in high traffic spots such as the bar specifically to bump into people. If you are not sure what to say when you meet someone in this situation, you can always fall back on something generic such as 'this really is good coffee, isn't it? This usually gets a response which translates into a conversation.
3. Volunteer to help at events. Especially if you are shy or nervous, volunteering is a great way to approach events since you will have a set task to perform which gives many comfort during an event. I have volunteered on numerous occasions to work the registration areas. I do this because it's a terrific place to meet people and you get to put a face to a name when giving them their badge. You are the first to welcome a potentially valuable contact and to make an impression.
Networking is a powerful tool. Through networking, relationships are built which over time could lead to new positions, partnerships and possibilities. Like most wines, it's a skill that gets better with time. The more you practice, the more comfortable you get. This creates more practice and so on. I have turned my love of networking into a company, Propel Careers. At Propel, we strive to use the power of networking to enhance valuable connections. Propel's goal is to enhance our industry by empowering people to grow through connections and networking. We are very excited to see the results of the connections we enable and how these relationships flourish over time!
